Malia DeFelice
Malia DeFelice is a much respected teacher in the art of Belly Dance in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. She is best known for her knowledge of Mid-Eastern and North African dance styles, including Egyptian Raqs Sharqi (Belly Dance), the folkloric dance of Tunisia and other regional styles, as well as American Cabaret Belly Dance style. She has an academic background in cultural anthropology with a focus on ethnic dance forms and ethnomusicology. Her mentors include Jamila Salimpour, Aisha Ali, Ibrahim Farrah, Leila Haddad and many others. Malia is artistic director of New Moon Belly Dance Ensemble , a group of women who enjoy performing at festive events.
Belly Dance is fun!!! In the countries of its origin, it is a dance of celebration and is a beautiful, expressive and powerful dance form. All are welcome to join in and explore this dance with it's multi-faceted richness! Each class starts and ends with a warmup/cool down stretch. Malia’s teaching format is built upon learning her extended vocabulary of Basic Belly Dance Steps and Movements which helps build flexibility, coordination, grace, balance, stamina and body positive confidence while moving to exciting rhythms and evocative melodies.
